About Thalassemia

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder occuring from a defective globin gene synthesis which results in unbalanced chain synthesis. The unpaired chains are insoluble and adhere to the cytoskeleton leading to early cell death (ineffective erythropoiesis) or shortened red cell life span.

Thalassemia disease states are either:

  • Transfusion-Dependent
  • Non-Transfusion Dependent
